Smoke-Free Northwest

Numerous reports by the U.S. Surgeon General over the years have documented the harmful effects of second-hand cigarette smoke on health. Additionally, these reports cite that there are no safe levels of exposure to second-hand smoke. In order to provide an environment that is safe and healthy for all students, employees, and visitors to Northwest Missouri State University, a policy has been adopted that prohibits smoking on all university owned or leased property and in all university vehicles. “Smoking” is defined as the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and all other forms of smoke-generating products.

This smoke-free policy went into effect on August 1, 2010.

This policy applies to all students, employees, contractors, volunteers, and visitors on university-controlled policy. 

Northwest Missouri State University reserves the right to initiate disciplinary procedures against any individual found to be in continuous violation of this policy; however all faculty, staff, and students will  have a collective responsibility to promote the safety and health of the campus community and therefore share in the responsibility of enforcement. Individuals observed smoking are to be reminded in a professional and courteous manner of the university policy.
